In 1953 Marjorie married Australian Olympic cyclist, Peter Nelson and settled down on a small almond orchard near McLaren Vale and raised three children. In 1975 Peter was struck down with leukaemia and after a very short time it took his life. Marjorie emerged from retirement to raise money for research in a battle to beat the disease. Marjorie enlisted the aid of Rotary to establish the fund and has tirelessly worked for it ever since. The Peter Nelson Leukaemia Fund neither seeks nor receives any Government funding. Marjorie Jackson-Nelson's personal time and efforts have raised all the funds so far, with the generous support of Rotary and other groups, companies and individuals who respond to the calls for help. More money means more research and thus an earlier end to the disease. Your help can bring this about and hasten the day when leukaemia joins the list of once-fatal diseases that medical science has conquered Marjorie and her completely volunteer staff need to raise $200,000 a year to fund the vital research necessary to combat this disease.
