FOUNDATION PRESIDENT, WAL BRADLEY

The Rotary Club of Encounter Bay is a sibling of the Rotary Club of Victor Harbor and was Chartered in 1979.

The founding president was Wal Bradley (pictured in 2006 when he was awarded the honour of our first Sapphire Paul Harris Fellow. He receives the medal from Michael Pengilly MP).

Wally was an active and dedicated member until health issues forced his resignation. Unfortunately, Wal passed away on the 10th September 2013.

ENCOUNTER BAY

The Bay was the meeting place of two great maritime expeditions of discovery, the British one sailing east led by Matthew Flinders, and the French one sailing west led by Nicholas Baudin.

The name 'Encounter Bay' (given to this water body by Flinders) commemorated the meeting of 8 April 1802. It can be presumed that both expeditions experienced surprise at meeting a foreign ship at this, the far end of the world! Neither Captain discovered the nearby mouth of the Murray River.

WAL BRADLEY, FOUNDATION PRESIDENT, HAS PENNED THE FOLLOWING IN RELATION TO OUR BEGINNINGS

The Rotary international theme in the charter year of the Rotary Club of Encounter Bay was

LET SERVICE LIGHT THE WAY

* Service was and has been the key to all activities and projects that have been undertaken. Serving individuals, serving groups, serving international needs and serving in our local community.

* People’s needs become opportunities to serve, and as we serve, we grow together in fellowship.

* Hours are spent on fundraising, to raise funds that may be used to encourage young people or old.

* Hours are spent in hands-on work, updating facilities or providing relief for tasks around the home of someone who is disabled.

* Hours are spent in one-on-one situations, hours in group efforts.

Some current service opportunities which the Rotary Club of Encounter Bay is undertaking are included in this web site, while other successful activities in the early days of the club, included……

* the Half Marathon Fun Run Goolwa to Victor Harbor

* the BBQ Van and Herby the MOBILE money-box

* year ten High school student’s Mock Job interviews

* beautification of the Railway line land

* a training workshop to train silk screen operators

Rotary provides opportunities to grow as an individual while assisting others. Rotary provides opportunities to leave our world a better place.
